ODDELLOWS ANNIVERSARY.
Wednesday 5 May 1880
The Loyal Havelock Lodge will hold their anniversary on Whit Monday. The members will meet at the Britannia Inn, New Headington, at half past nine, and, after partaking of lunch, will proceed to the village church, headed by the splendid banner of the district, and the Headington brass band, returning to the Britannia for dinner, and afterwards parading the village. The remainder of the day will be spent in dancing, and various amusements.

HEADINGTON JUVENILE BRASS BAND

This band held their annual supper on Saturday evening at the "Prince of Wales," Charles Street, Iffley-road. The members marched from Headington, through Cowley, to the above inn, where a capital spread awaited them A few friends in the musical line were included in the company at the table. The cloth being removed, some capital songs were sung, and a pleasant evening spent.

WASHERWOMEN'S ASSOCIATION

The Headington Quarry Branch of the Washerwomen's Association held their annual tea and entertainment on the 22nd ult., in a large room kindly lent by Mr. S. Goodgame, jun., when upwards of 60 sat down to an excellent tea, provided by Mrs. Sarah Morris, laundress. The Headington Juvenile Band, under the direction of Mr. G. Terry, was engaged for the occasion. After tea, dancing commenced to the strains of the band, and songs were sung at intervals by Messers T. Adams, Birt, and other members of the band. Several friends from the village also kept the harmony alive, and a pleasant evening was spent.

...After a few more toasts of a complimentary character had been given, the company dispersed to enjoy themselves, there being no lack of amusements provided. The Headington old brass band, under the direction of Mr. David Taylor, played a good selection of music throughout the day, and gave every satisfaction to the committee appointed to carry out the arrange ments, and to the company generally, which became numerous as the evening advanced.

A branch lodge (786) of this flourishing Society held their first anniversary on Monday last. In the morning the members met at their club room, the Original Swan, at Temple Cowley (Brother Cooper's), and marched to the old parish church, headed by the Headington Brass Band (under the leadership of Mr. George Terry), with banners, flags &c., the members wearing full regalia, where the vicar, the Rev. The first anniversary of lodge 786 was celebrated on Monday. when the members assembled at the club-house "The Original Swan," Cowley, and marched in procession to the village church, headed by the Headington Brass Band in uniform. An appropriate sermon was preached (the Rev. G. Moore), and subsequently the members and their friends dined together in a barn opposite the club-house, kindly lent by Mr. J. White, the interior oo the building being rendered bright and attractive by the aid evergreens, and a number of flags and banners tastefully arranged. - Oxford Times, Saturday 11 August 1883
Note: The Oxford Journal (11 August) reports the Headington Brass Band at two different events on the same day (Monday 6 Aug 1883); the club meeting in Cowley and the Horticultural Show in Headington, it could be the same band did both or there were two bands of similar names operating at the same time. The 6th August was a bank holiday, so it is likely the correct date. It is not known if George Terry's Headington Brass Band was directly related to the Headington Brass Band seemingly led at that time by David Taylor.
HEADINGTON HORTICULTURAL AND POULTY SHOW

On Monday last the Headington Horticultural, Poultry, and Cottage Garden Association held its annual exhibition in the grounds of the Manor House, Old Headington, by permission of Miss Watson-Taylor, and as the weather was on the whole, fine, a large attendance resulted.

On Monday week, the Cowley Lodge—No. 786 of the Order—held its second anniversary. The members assembled at the club-room, where they lunched, and, headed by the Headington Junior Brass Band. subsequently marched to the parish church.... A move was then made for the field, placed at the disposal of the members and their friends by Mr. Greenaway, where various amusements were provided ; and dancing to the strains of the band was afterwards indulged in, there being many present. So far as we have heard, all passed off satisfactorily.

A fete took place on Monday week, in Nuneham Park, on behalf of the Radcliffe Infirmary, when, notwithstanding the rain, which fell heavily dunng the earlier part of the day, over five thousand persons were present from Oxford, Abingdon, and the surrounding districts....Tea was provided in marquees, erected on the ground by Mr. Taylor, of the Isis Tavern, Iffley, and were crowded during the whole of the evening, as were the cottages. Subsequently, dancing was indulged in, to the strains of the City Police Bard, under the conductorship of Mr. N. Nutt; the 2nd Oxon Rifle Volunteer Band, leader, Mr. E. Lüdecke ; the Headington senior uniform brass band, conductor, D. Taylor ; all of whom gave their services free.

The anniversary of this flourishing Society, established in 1831, was celebrated with much success on Tuesday, and after the continuous rain the previous day the members were fortunate in having fine weather for the gathering. ... The members assembled at the club bouse, "The Carpenters’ Arms,” Middle Cowley, half-past ten, and went in procession, headed by Headington brass band, to church, where an appropriate sermon was preached by the Vicar, the Kev. G. Moore, from Galatians vi. 5. Subsequently the annual dinner was held at the ’’Carpenter’s Arms," ... The toast was drank with much enthusiasm, the band playing “For he’s Jolly good fellow,” in which the company heartily Joined.

The Cowley Branch of this Order celebrated their third anniversary on Monday last. The members assembled at their Club-room, whence they marched in procession to the Parish Church, headed by the Headington Senior Brass Band, where an appropriate sermon was preached by the Rev. G. Moore, Vicar. After the service the members, headed by the Band, proceeded to Little more, and then returned to Cowley to dinner, which was held in a large barn opposite the Club-room, kindly lent by Mr. White. About thirty-five sat down to dinner, the chair being taken by the Vicar.

The history of the band states that AJ Taylor Alfred Taylor, a Headington Carpenter forms the Headington Brass Band with his three sons John, Fred and Dan and eight other men, including Tom Tolley, Walter Gallaway, Paddy Burke and Tom Maisey. Victor Sugden in An Oxford Diary gives an exact date of 11 February 1887 but provides no source.
Odd Fellows’ Anniversary

HEADINGTON. Odd Fellows’ Anniversary.—The Royal Havelock Lodge of Odd Fellows held their annual dinner at the Britannia Inn on Whit-Tuesday. The members assembled in the morning, and headed by the Headington Brass Band marched in procession to the village church, where an appropriate sermon was preached by the Vicar (Rev. E. F. Tyndale). At 1.30 about 70 sat down to an excellent dinner, provided by Host Wild, the chair being taken by the Vicar. An adjournment was afterwaids made to the grounds, where sports and dancing brought to a close a most successful anniversary.

In the morning the members assembled at their Club Room, at the Carpenter's Arms, Middle Cowley, and after luncheon proceeded to the village Church, headed by the Headington Brass Band, under the able leadership of Mr. George Terry... In the evening, according to the usual custom, the band paraded the streets, calling at residences of patrons of the society... Nothing occurred to mar the festivities of the day, and the band gave general satisfaction.

FORESTERS' DINNER AND FETE AT IFFLEY.
The annual dinner and fête of Court "Hearts of Oak". No. 5,183 Lodge the Foresters Benefit Society, was held at the Tree Tavern, Iffley, on Wednesday. The proceedings commenced as early as half-past nine o'clock, when the members of the order met opposite Magdalen Road, Iffley Road, formed a procession, and marched to the Court room at Iffley. The Headington brass band marched at the head of the procession.

Sunday last was observed as Hospital Sunday, the first that has been held in the immediate neighbourhood. The weather ws all that could be desired, and a large number of people from the surrounding villages were present ... The bands and the members of the various clubs, met at the school at two o'clock, from whence they marched to Church in the following order : -Stanton Bramss Band, Stanton Friendly Society, Headington Brass Band, Forest Hill Friendly Society. Beckley Brass Band, Beckley Odd Fellows, Horton Brass Band, Stanton St. John Foresters, Headington Drum and Fife Band, Stanton St. John Juvenile Branch of Foresters. The church was crowded with a very attentive congregation. ... After the the bands and members paraded the village.
